PhysOrg: New machines could turn homes into small factories

PhysOrg: New machines could turn homes into small factories: "

A revolutionary machine which can make everything from a cup to a clarinet quickly and cheaply could be in all our homes in the next few years.
Research by engineers at the University of Bath could transform the manufacture of almost all everyday household objects by allowing people to produce them in their own homes at the cost of a few pounds. " ...

This guy's idea is to make a refrigerator-sized 3D printer that can work with plastics & metals (these already exist, btw, they're just expensive), but design it to be able to be made by the same kind of 3D printer, ie: one machine can replicate itself. Actually, the machine would make all the parts for a duplicate, and the user would then hand assemble those parts.

He wants to make the design freely available online and without patent, so that anyone can make/buy such a machine, make replicas, and sell them / give them to anyone else. Fabulous! *This* will be a breakthrough with some social impact!
